If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Living close to the campus is easier in Trier because the campus is not in the city. Moreover it's the best way to meet all foreign students.
Personal comments:
Accomodations are great. You can choose to live on your own or to share your flat with someone. You can even be with someone of you own university if you insist a bit.

German culture doesn't seem too different at the beginning but the more you know them the more you are disappointed!

The campus is great but the seminary for foreign student will make the most of your souvenirs: it's a cheerful experience .
