University of Cologne, Kerpener Straße 4, 50923 Köln, Germany
3.95 / 5 based on 282 reviews.
Description:
Numbering almost 62,000 students, the University of Cologne, is one of the largest of the German universities. It is also one of the oldest: in 1988 it celebrated six hundred years of existence. The foundation of many other universities in late medieval Germany was due to the initiative of important-spiritual and temporal authorities, but in Cologne it was the citizens who established the university. Thus today the University of Cologne is still a "city university", and that in a double sense: founded by the citizens of Cologne and with a university campus not outside of but within the city itself. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the large economic and industrial Rhine/Ruhr area in the north and the city of Bonn in the south. Among students the University of Cologne is high on the national scale of popularity, as surveys have repeatedly shown.

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
Cologne is just amazing when night life is taken into consideration. There are plenty of places to go and attractions to visit. I hardly ever went to the same place twice, because I didn't want to miss out on anything! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
As a CEMS student, there really weren't too many courses to chose among. My recommendation would be to attend the courses having an international aspect, because they were among the best at this university.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
The one big problem in Cologne, was that I had to search for all the literature myself. And the library was really large for someone coming from Norway. This took quite a long time in the beginning, but I eventually managed to find what was needed for the different courses. A major improvement would include more specified literature lists. Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
My stay in Cologne was very helpful in the process of improving my German. Most surprising to me was that all the exchange students communicated in German instead of in English, altough most of us had a better knowledge of the second language. Another aspect was the challenge of having to communiccate with people fraom so many different cultures. It wasn't always easy, but I think I've learned a great deal about other cultures and mind sets. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
Ruhrgas Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
The reason why I spent less on food is that this is generally cheaper than back home. My telephone bill also was reduced, mainly because most of the students found it a bit hard to speak German in the telephone. Accomodation is quite expensive in Cologne, especially when you want to live close to everything which I did. I also spent a lot on travelling because there is a lot to see in the middle of Europe. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
