The main reason is the next one: if you are living in a new place, you try to know everything. Besides the cost of life in France is more expensive than in Spain.
Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
The best option is having a VISA card, so you can buy in the shps, supermarkets and so on without any commission cost.

living in general is cheaper. appartments in grenoble aren't cheap but you get back half of the money as student! and of cours I traveled a lot.
