The whole quartier next to the Bourse is good for having some drinks on weekends....and everyday there is a suoerbe fleamarket on place jeux de balles....

Why?
Because I like to be independant, have my own bathroom and kitchen. But if it's only a short stay, student housing provided by the University would also suffice

Final comments
You will like Bruxelles, it is so international. For travelling, Brugge, Gent or Antwerp are great...and don't miss on the Carneval! There is one every weekend in another town during Carneval time!

Learning French was pretty easy as I had good basics from school and anyway almost nobody speaks English or German..so I had to go for French.
