I liked the restaurants at Bastille, although they were quite dear. There is a Cuban restaurant - I'm afraid I've forgotten the name!- and it is superb.

There were CROUS accommodations available for students, but I believe they were reserved primarily for French students as accommodation is very difficult to find in Paris.

I was in a Salvation Army hostel and paid 1600FF per month for my room, roughly 160 British pounds, so the rent wasn't expensive. Bus passes cost less (for the monthly "abbonnement")than in England.

It's worth asking a friend/relative to drive you back from Paris if you take many items- stereo, clothes, heavy books etc; it should work out cheaper.
