Why? you have the possibility to live together with people from other countries and an appartement is often nicer than a room on campus.in france, the rent that students have to pay is supported by the state, they pay you half the price of the rent.so almost everyone can afford it.

Why? I feel that by leaving with a family i would be more immersed into the French culture

Why? The facilities in campus rooms are very basic, there was no fridge, oven or grill the only cooking facilities were two hot plates, the particular campus I was on was the furthest campus from my university and it was difficult to return home at night, I feel that if I had my own apartment I would have felt more confortable and the French government help students out with rent.
Personal comments:
It wasn't completely unpleasent, the rooms were a good size and you had your on own sink, the showers were good and were cleaned everyday, there was internet access on the campus but only at certain times.
