Final comments
The french love filling out forms so take plenty of photocopies of everyhing and loads of passport photos. Definately get a 12 - 25 rail card, it will save you loads on rail travel not only just in France. If studying in Caen it is definately worth getting a monthly tram pass.

Before I went I thought I had a good level of French, however after arriving I felt that my conversational french was not great, I had better knowledge in working and business French which was no use to once there. However I feel that I have picked up more useful and relaxed vocab and am know able to understand the idioms and slang french that is used everyday

There is a government sceme CAF which will aid students with there rent. Try to get in contact with people who are studying there who may be able to leave there furniture, appliances etc. If not there are plenty of second hand furniture stores normally situated outside of the town. Also many foreign students are given the opportunity to become language assistants to earn some extra cash.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
The facilities in campus rooms are very basic, there was no fridge, oven or grill the only cooking facilities were two hot plates, the particular campus I was on was the furthest campus from my university and it was difficult to return home at night, I feel that if I had my own apartment I would have felt more confortable and the French government help students out with rent.

It wasn't completely unpleasent, the rooms were a good size and you had your on own sink, the showers were good and were cleaned everyday, there was internet access on the campus but only at certain times. The real misgiving I have about the rooms were the total lack of kitchen facilities.

There aren't really any night clubs they are mainly situated outside of the town in some remote location. There are some very nice bars as well as the token Irish bars. The student carnival which takes place in march, is a good laugh everyone goes out in fancy dress, there is also a market every sunday, which can be hit or miss.
