Description:
Founded in 1537, the Lausanne Academy gained its status as a university en 1890. It is today one of the principal institutions of higher education in Switzerland. It comprises seven faculties: Theology, Law, Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (SSP), Economics and Business Administration (HEC), Science and Medicine.

Type of housing: Off campus student accomodation

If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why? The accomodation provided for through the SOCRATES exchange was in the international student house. While this was very social and enjoyable, I would have hoped to have more opportunities to practise my French on a day to day basis. Like many international scenarios, English was the universal language in the international student accomodation and I would have preferred to stay somewhere more francophonic.
Personal comments:
The appearance of the apartment block was very off-putting since, from the outside, it appeared to resemble a prison. However, it was very friendly and the shared facilities meant that we interacted more frequently than other student households also provided by the university. I made a number of close and lasting friendships with the people who lived on my corridor. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

One place definitely not to be missed is La Barbare near the cathedral, which serves the best hot chocolate anywhere!! The central refectory, known affectionately as 'la banane' is very tasty and healthy and very good value for money. In town, Manora's great for good and healthy food when you're on a budget and the Bleu Lézard and Les Brasseurs are good bars. The city's beautiful so the view from virtually anywhere's great and in Ouchy you've got both a lake and mountains to look at!! My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I took a number of courses and found the overall teaching quality varied enormously. By far and away the best teacher was the linguistics professor who brought an inspiring amount of enthusiasm, research and wit into his classes. I wanted to change my major!
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
There was a lot of confusion between the two universities I was attending. Neither academic from either university would agree with the other or provide an adequate support. I believe that at least one of these professors has been taken from his role as exchange support since I returned from Switzerland. It was frequently difficult to find situations where I could speak French since many people in Switzerland are already fluent in English and enjoy the opportunities to practise it with a native speaker. I found it quite off putting to be responded to in English when speaking French and actually found I spoke French most frequently with the many German-speakers who were also in Lausanne to learn French. (This may explain why I seemed to have picked up a German accent in my spoken French!) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
Spent more on telephone as I was making international calls but SMS are roughly the same. Accommodation was surprisingly cheap, but my halls and accommodation at my home university is quite expensive anyway. Was spending more on nightlife but went out less so it balanced out, but found travel, especially round the country, a lot cheaper. Food, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was the same price as at home. Travel, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Swiss trains! Train travel is relatively cheap and can be brought down by buying a one year half-fare card (demi-tarif) which gets you half price tickets on train lines, and the vast majority of buses and boats. It costs about 150CHF but it is most likely that it will pay for itself. Overall, I found that Switzerland was cheaper than people say it can be, once you get to know where to cut costs. Personal recommendation:
It's a great university, very friendly with a beautiful green campus. I got to meet lots of international students and some Swiss students when I was there and am still in contact with now, and that's what made the experience. FINAL COMMENTS
Best place to travel to is to Geneva airport and go from its train station direct to Lausanne. If you feel a bit homesick or feel like you're not meeting enough people, the university has the Association pour les EtudiantEs Concerné par une Echange (AEcE, the international society) which organises loads of events and nights out.
