Getting there from the UK is easy - get a cheap (shouldn't pay more than around £50) flight to Paris and then a TGV direect to Le Mans.

Some buildings are newly upgraded and fantastic with built-in showers and toilets along with internet connections. Other buildings are diabolical and it depends on how lucky you are or how much you're willing to argue about cockroaches as to whether you get a nice room.
