Personal savings
Other sources of funding:
Government assistance
Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience
Personal spending habits
It was reasonably cheap. The only reason I spent more in some areas (telefphone, nightlife, and travel) was because I went out more and traveled more than I do at home.

Personal comments
The computer access at the university could be better. I ended up putting a DSL line in my room so I would not have to deal with it, adding a significant extra expense. I also traveled tons, but it was all worth it!

Academic
Course recommendations
The German "trial and error" system for choosing courses is the best I've seen. It gives students tons of freedom to take any type of course, and alos to try new things just for fun. The Deutsch als Fremdsprache classes, aren't phonominal, but ok. If you can take courses in German, or even another language, do so, because you will meet more Germans that way.

The system is very different, so if you are from an english speaking country, learn how Germans write papers before you attempt to do so. The style is very different.

A really nice place to spend a year. The weather can be a bit depressing, but towards the summer, it becomes really nice and the lake is wonderful to have nearby. I made amazing friends and had a BLAST. Would recomend the experiance to anyone...oh yeah, don't miss Ali Baba's Doener kebaps on Bodan Platz!!! They're the best in town!

Languages
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Basic phrases
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
Germans speak English if you ever get into a problem and are very willing to help. Though it's still hard sometimes doing things in a foreing language, it's all part of the adventure.

Personal social experience
Personal comments
There is a party every night in Konstanz. Don't miss Sonnenbuehl and Europahaus parties, and check out the Shamrock, the cocktail bar (half price wednesdays) and Shananigans. Make sure you are in town for Fasching, the only time of the year where the germans go absolutely crazy.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
It was right near the university for easy access to classes, and all of my friends lived there, so my social life revolved around where I lived. Also, I had contact with Germans through living with them.

Personal comments
It wasn't exactly a beautiful room nor did it have modern facilities, but after I got over that, I realized that it was the best place to live due to the social life and contact with Germans. The international environment is also a plus.
