I wish I had known...
I wish I had known that so many classes are in catalan. But I guess that if you are here for a longer time you can learn it. It is sort of mix between spanish, french and italian. For my short stay of three months it wasn't worth learning it. And don't make yourself illusions it would just be an accent, it's a language on it's own. But at the same time I don't want to make you scared. Go there! Barcelona is a great city! Beautiful, lots of things to do, with beaches and spanish is a beautiful language and not easy to learn.

It is supposed to be the best university in Europe for architecture, but I went to too few classes to be able to say something about it's quality. Neither was I participating in an exchange program which I think makes the start much easier. I had quite some troubles finding my way in the beginning, like finding out which classes are in spanish and where they are.

Go and live with other people in an apartment. I did that and had a great time. It's cheaper and you get to know people straight away.

For the rentings of particular things is quite difficult because its plenty of people who want to rent the same things and you have to wait a lot of time before to have a free place.

It is regarded as one of the best in the region but it is hard and there is a lot of studying, especially if your Spanish skills are not advanced

Accommodation just outside Barcelona is cheaper and nicer, and the travel doesn't take much longer. Instead you have better access to the local culture and the beaches are much more beautiful outside Barcelona. I lived in El Prat close where the Barcelona airport is. Good transport to the city, university and cleaner place. Close to wonderful places and beach of Sitges, Gava, etc.

I wish I had known...
I wish they would've told me that they almost exclusively spoke Catalan at the school I went to (ETSEIB). I probably would've come anyway, but it would've saved me a shock and some of my initial desperation. Also maybe that undergrad students in Spain are really young (18-23, with almost noone any older), as the situation in my home country is very different (a lot of people work for years before going to university).

If you're willing to fight your way through a bilingual education, go for it.

August is THE holiday month in Spain. It is virtually impossible to get anything done. At the university, noone even picks up the phone. Don't panic if it's only ten days to go til school starts, and you have absolutely no clue how it will be, which classes you will attend, or even where you'll be staying.

UPC is a big and really good university, but I was in a small faculty (Agronomic), if you're studying Architecture, Industrial Engineering.... I'm sure that your experience will be unforgettable
