I spent alot of money eating and drinking out, regularly. The food and drink was cheap in comparison to England, but I indulged alot more! However, the rent was cheaper, so that made a difference. I think that if a student is sensible, then they could spend less than at home; but the cafe's/restaurants/bars and shops are all too tempting! Food, Nightlife, Overall: was more expensive than at home. Travel: was the same price as at home. Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Take out a student overdraft facility before you go (jusy in case) and also sort out on-line banking too, before you go, as it saves alot of hassle. Do not carry all of your bank cards at the same time as muggings are common. Leave a travellers cheque under the bed, just in case. Photocopy everything, twice. One copy in your room, the other in england. Buy phone cards from the stalls on the ramblas to make local and international calls; very cheap. Some of the tourist spots, such as the "MareMagnum" are outrageously expensive for drinks in bars & clubs. (10 euros). Wine and other alcoholic drinks are dirt cheap from local supermarkets, only 90 cents for a decent tasting wine. Take advantage of it! I spent more on the phone because I called home about once a week (back to the US). My accommodations were much less because I was renting a room. At the university back home if you rent a room you pay out the nose!!! Nightlife was more expensive since I really couldn't go out at home--I was under 21 (you know that silly rule over here!). Travel was more because I took more trips by train and plane. Back home I would take trips by car. Overall, the tuition and housing came out to be about the same as back home. Travel, Nightlife, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Food, Overall: was the same price as at home. Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
The only thing that comes to mind was that I had to remember that they charged you money if you called locally. At home we do not pay if we are in our own area code. To get the best rates on trains talk a bit with the clerk. They will tell you tips. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

I paid a fee that included room and board which was much higher that my room and board expenses at the University of Illinois. The fee, however, also gave me an opportunity to meet a great family, learn about their way of life, taste Spanish home cooking, have my laundry, cooking, and cleaning chores taken care of, and take advanatge of countless other perks of a homestay arrangement. I spent less on eating out because I didn't eat out much in Barcelona, but rather on trips out of town. I spent less on the telephone because I used e-mail to communicate with family and friends back home or I arranged for my parents to call me at home instead of paying higher rates to call them and burdening my host family with the cost. I spent more on nightlife because the bars and clubs in Barcelona are not the cheap campus bars and clubs of Champaign-Urbana. Compared to what I was used to paying when going out, the nighlife in Barcelona was much more expensive. I spent more on travel because I traveled all over whenever I had a chance to do so. I don't travel much out of Champaign-Urbana because I don't have the same opportunities. The overall cost of my experience in Barcelona was high because, in addition to the above-mentioned, the tuition fee I paid Knox College, a private institution, was much higher than that at the University of Illinois. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
After the Knox College program fees, most of my money was spent on travel. I got a membership with Hostelling International to help bring down the cost of accomodations and was able to stay at their hostels in most of the places I visited, but only if I called to make reservations at least five days in advance. I also got a Spain Flexipass before I left the US, which saved me money on train trips, especially between Barcelona and Madrid. food was cheaper there, specially fresh fruit an vegetables, phoning in spain is dominated by so calles "toques", means missed calls to agree or disagree. housing was more expensive because in austria i stay at a house of my dad. because of travelling a lot i spend a lot of money therefor. Travel, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was less expensive than at home.

Euro makes everything expensive. The convertion to real is 2,80 reais buy 1 euro, so everything seems much much expensive. The night clubs were good and actually less expensive that the ones in Brazil, maybe because there are more, and the food is not that expensive to, if you know how to cook. Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.

On the overall I spent more than usual on these things for the sole reason that I was out in the world seeing things that I had never seen before - not on a campus doing the same old s**t. So from that point of view, one is definitely going to be spending more than usual. Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was more expensive than at home. Food, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.

Not because home country is more expensive, on the contrary, Spain is quite cheap. But at life as an Erasmus student is quite sociable, you spent more money and time on nightlife, travel etc. Also the housing was more expensive as the location was very good. Food is definitely cheaper, but you tend to go out to dinner much more often than at home. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Telephone: was the same price as at home.

Telephone calls are extremely expensive, in Toronto you can talk on the phone for a flat rate of about 30 $a month, in Spain it's about 30$ a week, without talking alot. I only used my phone to make arrangements to meet people. Never talked more than 5 min with someone. Nightlife, well most clubs are about 15euros to get in , and then alcoholic drinks are about 6 euros each. Ofcourse there are cheap bars, but I'm talking about clubs here... Groceries, with the exception of fruits and vegetables are more expensive. Oranges are really cheap... Accomodation, well I paid 270 euros a month for a room in an apartment which had no heating... That's about 450 canadian dollars... Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Travel: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Don't get a cell phone... Super expensive. The universities have internet labs that are free, so use those instead of the internet cafes. There is also the Boqueria (farmers market downtown) which is super cheap. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
