I had private accomodation right in the old city centre, fairly cheap with lots of things to go through. Red lights definitely are an experience...

For the night out clubbing, 'mazzo' definetly is the spot. 'Cafe de Jaren' certainly is the most popular cafe though by far not the best. Check typical 'oud-bruin'-places at zeedijk or ' 't loosje' at nieuwemarkt. Check out 'Paradiso' frequently, too.

Final comments
I had a wonderful time, met bizarre people and was terribly homesick. Americans usually do the all-over-Europe-trip and profit from Amsterdam as a place 'right in the middle of stuff'.

Because accomodation is, though decent in comparison to other European major cities, by far more expensive than in Berlin. Same with nightlife activities.

Personal comments
If you are from somewhere within the European Union, don't bother applying for the expensive residence permit, since nobody will ask you afterwards.
