I wish I had known...
It is almost impossible to travel in Florida without a car because the rail system is less organised than in France. To go out of Gainesville, we had the choice betwen car renting or Greyhound buses, which are not very comfortable for long distances. If I had known this before, I would have buy a car with other students at the beginning of my stay.

Personal recommendation:
To succeed at the University of Florida, you need to keep in mind that you're here to study and work seriously for your exams. It may be harder than in other universities because there is always a holiday atmosphere with sunshining, people smiling and plenty of things to do! This university is perfect for open-minded students who like to live in a multi cultural state. Indeed, many students at Gainesville come from Miami and are Latino Americans or Afro-Americans. As a consequence,Spanish is spoken a lot and classes are given to study Latino or Afro Americans history.



FINAL COMMENTS

Be careful when you take your plane ticket to go to Florida. If you need to stop over in Washington or Chicago, plan to spend at least two hours at the checking (nobody cares if you miss your plane to Jacksonville or Miami) . I have seen people forced to sleep at Washington airport because they had missed their plane and that the next one was in the morning!

Please organise something more for the international students. I found them by myself but only from my own country and study field. it would have been nice to meet more international people. This was the only thing I missed in my whole experience



FINAL COMMENTS

I had the best time of my life. If you ever get the chance to go, do it!! And don't worry about the money too much. The US is expensive, but you can better enjoy the money you spend than think about it all day. Travel tip: Miami!! And of course Orlando with all its parks.

This is a very good university with a good quality of courses and a lot of activities in the student life. It is better to have a car to travel.



FINAL COMMENTS

To travel in the state, it is better to rent a car (if you don't have one). Otherwise, there is a travel agency in the university where you can have good price for flight tickets... Gainesville is well located bacause you can esely go to Miami and south Florida, to Louisiana... A good tip: in January, the weather is not as warm as in Miami!! So don't forget warm clothes!!

J'aurais aimé savoir les complications administratives qui peuvent se présenter lors de l'inscription à l'université. J'aurais pu être plus préparé: posséder tous les papiers et m'attendre à d'interminables procédures.

Préparer un budget afin d'être prêt à toutes éventualités. Préparer touts les papiers requis avant de quitter pour la Floride. Contacter les professeurs des cours choisis pour savoir s'ils se donnent encore. Vivre près du campus !



FINAL COMMENTS

Les États-Unis étaient, lors de mon séjour et toujours actuellement, dans un période anti-terrorisme. Il n'a pas donc pas été facile d'entrer au pays même en temps que canadienne. Il faut donc préparer son séjour bien à l'avance pour être sûr d'avoir le bon type de VISA.

Tuitions assistance programs: tuitions for international students who transfer are very expensive and therefore it takes a lot of resources to have the chance to study abroad as a transfer students (different for exchange programs)

Take advantage of the many social life opportunities that are offered to you as a student: clubs, associations, sports, travel, team projects, personal research projects, international students...



FINAL COMMENTS

The International Center is a great place to get all the information you need. People there are very nice and helpful. Use your time off to travel around the city and accross the State. Florida has so many unique places to visit that it would be too sad to miss the opportunity to take full advantage of being there. Finally, University of Florida is among the best campuses in the US in terms of college sports: go to the Swamp (UF football stadium) or to the O'Connell Center (basketball, volleyball...) to watch the Gators playing for the national title every years! Go Gators!

Go for it ! Enjoy on-campus activities (especially sports), nightlife and travel

Great stay Do not hesitate in buying a bike or a car at arrival Enjoy sports activities I would recommand not to live alone but in international students residence (La Mancha if 1 year) or shared appartments and houses off campus

It is a great University! The campus life is just amazing and the academics are ok. Gainesville is a small but nice and very vibrant city.

My experience at UF was extremely fulfilling. I improved my English skills, I travelled around Florida and some other parts of the US (even though getting a cheap flight from Gainesville is quite difficult and you might have to go to Jacksonville or Orlando to get the best deals).The courses were very interesting and exciting.

It is a big, very modern university that is rated among the top 50 of US business schools and is highly estimated among recruiters, companies, people in general and so on.

Come for the first semester if possible because the Gators footbal team is great ! Go Gators !

You can come from Orlando : 2hrs by car, Tampa 2hrs by car. I don't recommend to come from Miami because the Greyhound buses are quite slow and it's 5 hours far. You can land directly in Gainesville without problem. Prepare or a first night at the hotel if you don't know anybody there because air companies may be very late on their schedule, like 8hrs for me...

Read the homepage very well before going there. Make a big list of courses you want to follow, since many can be canceled.

Start arranging the paperwork very early. Buy a car Don't have a small budget for this area, everything is expensive but the fun is worth it. Find a good place to live, for example an international student complex.

This University is national champions in basketball and football! Just go there and enjoy the gator experience in a real college town!

to get to Gainesville, prefer Miami or Atlanta, they have direct liaisons by plane. If you prefer bus there are shuttles from Jacksonville and Orlando and it's a lot cheaper!!
