Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? When you choose to undertake a postgraduate qualification it is better to have your own space to be able to work properly
Personal comments:
I did not get to know the accommodation provided by the University but from other colleagues I heard it was very good and value for money.

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
The TKTS BOOTHS, Operated by the Society of London Theatre, the TKTS booths in Leicester Square or at the Canary Wharf DLR stations are the only places to get real HALF-PRICE theatre tickets for the same day. save save and save more

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
The whole university is not to be recommended. It is very much below German standards. In England there is a difference concerning the quality of the Universities. Go to a university that is part of the university of london (Greenwich is not) and go for a prestigious university. All of my teachers in biology made mistakes and all of them with the expetion of one only waffled during the 'lecture' hardly giving any real information and that information contained mistakes. In the laboratory the assistants screamed at students regularly and the atmosphere was very unpleasant. After every day I had been at univerisity I felt that I had waisted the day. I had not learned anything and I was unhappy. Overall the level was very low. Social life on campus was fun but it's the same at other campuses (as I have found out). To give you examples of the mistakes: I had to calculate the molar mass and handed in a correct solution. The work was marked wrong and the lecturer actually did not know how to make thecalculations. (Admitted by the head of school) There are 4 different bases in the DNA. According to an arab lecturer of mine there would be 3. Seriously

My opinion of the university assessment

Educational

Overall
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
It was very useful to go abroad to learn the host country's language. However, teachers didn't take into account that I was not English native speaker when they had to assess my courseworks

EXPENSES
by ronaldwolf, Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Biology, Independent
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
None
Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience
Personal spending habits:
Food is incredibly expensive. Eating out is not much more expensive than cooking for yourself. Snacks like sandwiches are 3 pounds and are not great quality, 2 Chicken breast fillets are 13 pounds, There was no telephone provided by the univeristy and I had to use a mobile with a calling card. The bill could be 200 pounds a month. I strongly recommend using the internet (for which access is provided) and a software that allows you to make phone calls to a telephone. A Day travel card cost 5.20 pounds, Nightlife: Entry to a venue is 5-10 pounds
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Not all cash machines accept foreign credit cards. When I tried to maximise the withdrawal from my credit card and tried something like: withdraw 330 pounds -> no, 320 pounds -> no, 300 punds ->yes 310 pounds -> you can not withdraw cash. There is a limited number of failed attempts to withdraw cash and it does not work for the whole day if the number is exceeded. Always keep cash for an emergency

FINAL COMMENTS

Before going anywhere, do your search and collect information on all aspects of the student and non-student life in the destination country. Arrange your accomodation and your finance before arriving in he country. Try to learn the language at least to an intermidiate level. Always generate contacts even e-contacts as difficult situations may arise and you may need help. Don't always count on family. Prepare yourself to be completely independent. Don't forget to enjoy life as life is too short.
