University of Helsinki

Helsingin Yliopisto, Yliopistonkatu 4 - P.O. Box 33, 00014 Helsinki, Finland
4.05 / 5 based on 198 reviews.
Description:
The University of Helsinki (Helsingin yliopisto) is the oldest and largest university in Finland. It was founded in 1640 as the "Academy of Turku"; Turku being the former capital of Finland, which was then part of the Swedish realm. After Finland was annexed to the Russian Empire in 1809, the capital was moved to Helsinki. In 1827 the University was transferred to Helsinki, where it opened the following year under the name of the Imperial Alexander University, after the Russian Czar Alexander the Second. It was the only university in Finland until 1919.

I would finally comment on the approach of university administration that it does not consider on any possible conflict regarding the issue of transfer of credits at the end of terms. Also I suffered from too burocratical stuff such as extending of my resident permission and obtaining public transportation card. All those problems could be prevented from occuring if the university administration had dealed with them on behalf of their prospective students before. Read Review

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why? It would be better way to get adopted and familirized with culture of a country and would provide more social atmosphere.
Personal comments:
It was located nearby a train station called Kannelmaki and it was slightly out of the city. Eventough I liked to live in a forest-surrounded town and flat, including great facilities, it was not a created area for student life.

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Barikarpenan is a student oriented club which all students drop in on Thursday and get socialized in. It was my favourate too. Student Union was a good mediator between social life and university life. Unicafe presents great facilities for infotainment. Hyvee Vappu is a cool celebration of 1 th May and should not be missed. It is held in a park where people and students enjoy the taste of freedom and get rid of the feeling of boredom.

ACADEMIC       3.0 / 5
My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
It was limited for the term of 2005-06 and there were not various cources to prefer one to another. Thus cources would be more multiple cource schedule than it was presented to students.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
I would suggest that there would be course rich program for Erasmus Student and so they could not get in trouble with the transfer of credits.
