I wish I had known...
One semester is not enough time. It takes a few month to become completely familiar with the new environment. By the time one can say he/she is really feeling like home, it is almost time to leave again. If I have the chance to study abroad again, it will be a full academic year. In my opinion:

Don't panic if the courses you want to attend are already full. Students drop a lot of classes within the first few weeks of instruction. It is usually not necessary to attend a class from the first day on. FINAL COMMENTS
Spending a semester in a town like Urbana-Champaign is the perfect evidence, that no matter where one goes to study abroad, it is a very good time and a great experience in any way. One meets nice people and new friends everywhere. The life on a big campus, that seems like an own town within a town, is quite impressive for European students. Every class requires a lot of preparation (readings, several assignments) - so it's extremely important to choose just courses you're interested in! Otherwise you'll get unwilling to do all the home assignments and you won't have the best experience/meaning about this semester abroad. FINAL COMMENTS
Make use of the numerous meetings/activities organised for the students - especially at the beginning you have to go out, communicate, make some friends. Get to know the habits of the locals, celebrate their public holidays/activities (eg Halloween, Thanksgiving,..) and use the free time to travel around This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

It's a campus town, with a typical American campus (quad, etc.). If you want to experience this movie-feeling, that it's the right choice. Concerning the academic setting, the UIUC is a brilliant choise too, and it has one of the biggest libraries in the States. FINAL COMMENTS
take as much money with you as you can get: you will need it for travel (New York, Niagara Falls, Chicago, etc.) and for Shopping. Don't take too many clothes with you - they are fucking cheep over there! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

If you want to get to know the Midwest-way-of-life - go there! If you want to get to know to a fancy, metropolitan city - go to another place. The US-Midwest is really really different. But definitely an experience. FINAL COMMENTS

If you want to experience life on a typical American university campus, in a typical American small town in the countryside and are interested in getting to know especially people from all parts of the world studying together in this microcosmos, Urbana-Champaign is probably one of the best choices you have! Fly into Chicago and take a bus from O'Hare to Urbana-Champaign. You have two options (both depart from the bus teriminal behind the Hilton at the airport): Lincolnlandexpress and Bluebird. If you arrive late, stay in the "Illini Union" (center of the university) for the first night: It's quite cheap (ca. 28$) and comfortable! It's hard to get the classes you need and want; if you are a business major and want to do something different, then you should really go there! FINAL COMMENTS
It's a cool party university in the middle of nowhere. The campus is awesome, and I like it best of all campus I've seen (I saw UCLA, Berkeley, McGill). As an international you will really party a lot. But for traveling on the weekend the location is, for sure, not the best. It takes a long time by bus to get to Chicago. The sports facilities are great, certainly when IMPE opens again it will be overwhelming. Buy a car, otherwise you are stuck!!! Chicago is close and in my opinion the best city in the US. To the south there´s St. Louis, which has some good Blues and Jazz Bars. I recommend it to everybody. It is a good and safe place. It has nice people and a lot of international students, but the most important, is that law school is very good and it has a very good faculty, willing to help international students. FINAL COMMENTS
If you go to University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, you wont feel alone. It is a students place, so wherever you go, you will find students. good courses, huge library, good campus life. avoiding to value the cultural differences helps a lot. and there are quiet some, so be prepared (books (Studienhalber in den USA; Thomas) or trainings). take your time before the semester to get some orientation here (1 week). I really enjoyed my stay. Academically, it wasn't so good for me, since I wasn't allowed to take any classes in my major (business). There is not really much advice to give here, most of the student life takes part on campus (which is really nice by the way) during the day and at the bars or house parties at night, which are mostly on campus or very close.
