University of Oxford
University of Oxford, Wellington Square, OX1 2JD OXFORD, United Kingdom
Description:
Oxford is a unique and historic institution. As the oldest English-speaking university in the world, it lays claim to eight centuries of continuous existence. Since WWII, Oxford has added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as a focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate.

Course recommendations:
We were on a self-contained course, so didn't interact with others, outside of our research project (which included an interview project). This year I am going back with a different school, to a different Oxford college, and looking ford to seeing the differences, as the programs on set up differently. One of the pluses for this was that our professor arranged an "insider's tour" of the BBC radio.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
I liked the readings, journal writings, interactive discussions, graduate project and field trips. It was not too taxing for a summer course, yet I learned alot, and luckily didn't need computer access. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Read as much as possible on 16th and 17th century English History and Literature before arriving... when there, it's often difficult to focus on academics with so many activities available. If you are prepared beforehand, you can better enjoy the best of both worlds.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
No-- the program is challenging and demands a great deal of its students; yet you learn an immense amount in a short time. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Course recommendations:
We had fewer courses to choose from, through a special arrangement made by Stanford, but even then we couldn't go wrong. It was a chance for us to explore interests we wouldn't normally have time or opportunity to back at home.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Not at all. Academic standards in the UK are set very high, which I appreciated and learned a great deal from. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Well, most of these exchange programs have pre-determined course "packages" (mine, for instance, required you to take the 4 courses outlined in the program). This is great, as long as you're interested in all of the courses offered (otherwise, you may be able to arrange a substitution of independent study for one of the courses).

Taught graduate course are extremely formulaic and intensive and, depending on subject, the student is left with little choice. Research Masters degrees are the way to go for really exploring individual interests.

make sure you know in advance, which tutors you have in your tutorials. this is where you can learn a lot (or not!) while lectures are rather poor.

I really enjoyed the tutorials more than I thought I would. I would like more journalism or media studies courses taught by the dons to international students.

As a visiting student, think broadly. Do not let people tell you what to do; explore areas off the beaten path; it took me one term (trimester) to find this out.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
In certain scientific fields (e.g. physics) Oxford is far lacking behind continental universities and in reality does not match its reputation. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
