University of Oxford
University of Oxford, Wellington Square, OX1 2JD OXFORD, United Kingdom
Description:
Oxford is a unique and historic institution. As the oldest English-speaking university in the world, it lays claim to eight centuries of continuous existence. Since WWII, Oxford has added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as a focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate.

Why? I am lucky enough to have met wonderful people through living in a college-owned house. At Oxford the college is the centre of social life for most students and those living out are not as likely to be easily involved.
Personal comments:
St. Hugh's College houses graduate students in old Victorian homes around the perimeter of the college grounds. They are large, but many are in great need of significant renovations and repairs. The roommates have not been adjusted in a few years, so people with large rooms are often paying less than people with very small rooms This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? If I was to go back and study or work anywhere in the United Kingdom, I would like to live just as I would if I were a citizen of the country, rather than as a student. I want to be independent.
Personal comments:
Because it was Oxford, I enjoyed living near that much history every day. The accomodations, while a bit of a shock at first, added to the overall experience. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? I'd choose a different college, maybe. St.Catherine is ok, but other colleges are much better.
Personal comments:
It was Ok. Food was quite horrible, though in line with UK standards. For the rest, it was ok, with a good common room, and a few nice social activities. Gym was excellent and the location is very good too: 1 min. walking from hte law faculty... This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? The apartment I was staying in was pretty much 'on campus' (Oxford's colleges are spread throughout the city): it was right across from Magdalen college, the college I was affiliated with during my stay in the UK. I was very much a part of the college social and academic scene -- I ate in the college dining hall, joined the rowing team, hung out in the JCR, among other things -- but I always wondered what it would be like to actually live in the dorms. I suppose, then, I'd be looking for an experience different from the one I already had.
Personal comments:
The apartment I stayed in with the other Stanford students was fabulous. It was well situated, well furnished (my room was adorable, besides being comfortable and warm) and well run. We were served tea and pastries everyday at 4 on the dot by Pat, our 'house mum'. The staff was so wonderful. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? Oxford is absolutely beautiful and the dorms are more than accommodating, particularly in comparison to an American university's on campus accommodations. I lived right in University College with a view that overlooked the library and could also hear the people gathering at the beer cellar bellow my room. I had a sitting room and smaller bedroom which included a sink. Additionally, Oxford provided a cleaning and turn over service which straighted our rooms every morning. Also, the campus feels extremely safe.
Personal comments:
The house is more than enough for anyone, particularly an American student. Many of my friends, including myself, that lived in University College had a sitting room and a bedroom. The staff at Oxford takes care of cleaning the rooms. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? I attended Oxford as an undergraduate; now that I have both Bachelor's and Master's degree, I feel living independently would be best.
Personal comments:
We stayed in single-room houses at St. Anne's College, and had access to the libraries at Oxford, as well as the dining facilities at St. Anne's. In many respects, we had all the advantages of a typical St. Anne's student. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? Living at Trinity College made my trip extremely convenient. I lived in a prime location - everything being within 5 minutes away.
Personal comments:
The housing was neat considering it was such a historic building but had recently been remodeled. We had scouts to make our beds, clean the bathroom, and empty trash. The accomodations were very nice for on-campus housing This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Why? Independent apartment living, kitchen, parking accessibility, central to town.
Personal comments:
Housing in Oxford was more than adequate. Each floor had a shared kitchen which was fully functional, the University provided all bedding and bath necessities and a full bathroom was located privately in each single or double room. accomodation is way to expensive for what you get: only, unclean, small rooms with high prices. apartments are even worse int terms of prices. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
