University of Oxford
University of Oxford, Wellington Square, OX1 2JD OXFORD, United Kingdom
Description:
Oxford is a unique and historic institution. As the oldest English-speaking university in the world, it lays claim to eight centuries of continuous existence. Since WWII, Oxford has added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as a focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate.

Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
We went to a pub called 'Thirst' a lot. (Well, when we had time in between our studies, which were very rigorous!) Also a club right across the way. The name, I forget. My apartment was right on High Street. There are lots of great shops along the way, if you're into that. Eat a cookie at 'Ben's Cookies' in the Covered Market -- they are ridiculously good. Go inside Christ Church if you can (it's closed to outside visitors). It's where 'Harry Potter' was filmed. Go to the college bops. I found the name funny at first, but I had a great time each time I went. Oxford is beautiful, but make sure you travel as much as you can. Scotland and Ireland are gorgeous. We frequented the local pubs almost nightly; in particular, we could be found at the Horse & Jockey pub and the Eagle & Child. Our favorite restaurant was Brown's, and our favorite cafe/sandiwch spot was Taylor's. All of thes were close to campus. The bookstores in Oxford should not be missed-- particularly Blackwell's. We also had the opportunity to study in the Radcliffe Camera at the Bodleian Library, which was an amazing experience. I recommend touring the many colleges within Oxford, and seeing as much of the Bodleian as possible. Overall, Oxford is filled to the brim with terrific spots for both students and tourists. We went to this bar called Bridge almost every night we were in Oxford. It was so much fun, very much an American-ized taste in music. It was funny how almost every bar we went to played a Grease medley. I really enjoyed eating at Harvey's and Pret-A-Manger, both great eateries for sandwiches. The covered marker is also something that anyone should experience. I would also recommended Ahmed's for late night eating. It is an elongated kabob stand with all sorts of things to eat (the hummus and fries are AMAZING!) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The Turf Tavern is a fantastic student pub located behind New College and the King's Arms around the corner is also big with students. Other popular pubs are the Royal Oak, Bookbinders Arms, Radcliffe Arms, and Jude the Obscure. Best pub food at the King's Arms, but for real food the Jericho Cafe is not to be missed. My roommate and I travelled every chance we got-- set up tours, took buses to Heritage houses, took the local bus to London to the Glob theatre. It was very easy to travel, and we walked around Oxford. I loved the charity shops, tea room, shops, and covered shopping center. The King's Arms pub and the Chequers Pub on the High Street were both great; walking along the River Isis (Thames) was a great way to take in a rowing match and meet some friendly folks. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

I didn't really have a favorite pub or cafe in Oxford, because I tried to go to as many different places as possible while I was there. Everything was great! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Great pubs, like Bath's place. Still, don't expect London, Oxford is a little town and in wintertime it could be really boring. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
