Well, it's hard not to want to experience nearly everything when you're outside of your home country, so as a result, travel costs tripled! Try to watch eating out every day; it really adds up! Going to the grocery store/covered market and picking up breads and cheeses for the week saved a lot of money.

It's also easy to be free with the plastic, so I'd recommend withdrawing a fixed amount of cash each week from a cash dispenser and trying to only spend that much (so very hard to do, but possible).

I spent more, but we squeezed in quite a bit of organizaed travel-- saw most of the highlights between Oxford, London,Bath, Windsor, Canterbury, and on to Paris.

One of the undergrads wasn't prepared for the higher costs, and ran out of money halfway through the trip. Also, we were responsible for all meals on weekends. (Pizza Hut was the only place open late...).

I spent less on the telephone bill simply because my cell phone doesn't work overseas. I spent more overall than I do at home because of the exchange rate.

Save up money for travel before you go abroad. I never expected traveling from Oxford to other places in the UK, like Edinburgh and Dublin, to be so easy. I wanted to travel and having the money to do so helps.

the pound was very strong compared to the swiss franc. oxford is a very expensive city as such. but drinks and entrys to bars etc. are student friendly. i had no telephone access at my corridor so had to get my own mobile. basic but good food (except meat) is more expensive that expected. public transport is rather poor in britain and not nationaly handled. therefore it is hard to get reduced prices (as long as you don't plan far ahead).

Inevitably, things are more expensive in England. Also, there were often times when we tired of the St. Anne's College dining hall, and wished to stretch our wings. Typically, going out is not cheap; but in such an active environment, it's unavoidable. We all just accepted having to spend more money, for the most part, and it became a non-issue after we had been in residence a few weeks.

There are often opportunities to take long weekends to travel outside of England. If you wish to do this, plan ahead so that you can budget accordingly. Do not always try to translate pounds into dollars in order to get a deal-- you must accept the fact that you will pay more in pounds. If you wish to buy day-to-day items and books, do so in Oxford and not in London, where things are more expensive.

The conversion rates are terrible, and the prices don't seem (to me, anyway) to reflect that conversion! The Euro works better with the dollar.

REVIEWS BY INTERNS AT University of Oxford
Travail d'un architecte
Pendant mon stage au bureau d'architecture GRAFT, j'ai pu découvrir les principales tâches d'un architecte : trouver l'inspiration, esquisser des idées, élaborer un plan final et construire un modèle physique du bâtiment.
Learnt a lot about NGOs in role helping asylum seekers
A fantastic experience helping asylum seekers to navigate the social services they would need to bring forward their asylum claim in Cyprus. This made me think a lot about the nature of social aid and NGO work, but I also found it amazing working with such an inspiring team and helping people in need.
ABOUT
Oxford is a unique and historic institution. As the oldest English-speaking university in the world, it lays claim to eight centuries of continuous existence.
Since WWII, Oxford has added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as a focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate.
