My level after: At ease in most situations
How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
Personal comments:
In Croatia you can survive speaking English. Whenever somebody doesn't speak English, everybody is willing to interpret. Unfortunately the English skills of most Croatians are not good enough for a more detailed conversations in a bar or cafe. Most Croatian do not have enough patience to talk with foreigners speaking some Croatian.
