HOUSING
by Nigora, Russian-Tajik Slavonic University, Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Sociology, Open Society Institute-Soros Foundation
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I am accustomed to living independently. Also, dormitories are located very far from the main university building, and it takes a lot of time to get to the university. I value my time; therefore prefer to live close to the university in a seperate apartment.
Personal comments:
My housing is rather good I would say in terms of its location. Since it is located in the very centre of Budapest, and only 2 minutes from the university (Deak Ter), it is quite costly. It is a small studio for one person. I like it very much, although the rentpay is quite costly. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
by Sabiha, Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Personal comments:
You can enjoy gypsy music and folk dance with delicious food in Kaldy Pince which is inside Hotel Domina Inn Fiesta, and it is really cheap compared to other restaurants with dance and music. Cha Cha Cha Club on Margit Island is an open bar-club with a nice atmosphere. There are lots of cafes with good coffee or other kinds of drinks in Raday and Vaci Utca. Swimming pools and Turkish baths are famous in Budapest. Szecheny is the best of them I guess. There are street festivals especially in summer time where you can listen various kinds of music for free This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I wish the more boring courses will not have to be mandatory:) However, I guess it was just a coincidence that the more interesting ones were elective:)

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) Personal comments:
Language of instruction was English, so no problems at all. Hungarian was only needed in the street, I did some language courses to learn a bit more than the basics, to get around etc. and that was a very good experience. Just adds a lot to you understanding of life and culture if you speak the local language (a bit). However, Hungarian is amongst the most difficult languages and nobody else except Hungarians speak it, so lots of dedication is in order! EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Other Other sources of funding:
OSI scholarship - Soros Foundation Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work Personal spending habits:
Simply, my home country Tajikistan is located in central Asia, a post-soviet country. Hungary, by contrast, is a new member of EU, and the prices have risen visbly over recent time. Services cost more, and in general standard of living is higher in Hangary than in Tajikistan Food, Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
not really; although make sure you follow all the rules in subway stations (buy new tickets when changing the lines). I did not know that and was fined when I first arrived in Budapest. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
To start sending Cv earlier. In Hungary, unless you speak absolutely perfect Hungarian, finding a job is an uphill battle. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Its not set up like a typpical American university, where social events are school sponsored. If you just put a bit of effort into it, you will have a great time. FINAL COMMENTS
