HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: with friends
Why? The standard of rented accommodation is dire and the prices are sky-high. Anyone used to North European or American standards will be shocked at the awful state of most rented accommodation in Barcelona and the unreasonably high rents.
Personal comments:
There is ESADE's student residence but it is a bleak, unattractive environment-presumably a carry-over from the austere monk-like preferences of ESADE's founders (Ignacio de Loyola, the Order's founder spent a long time musing in a cave on the outskirts of Manresa and whipping himself). The residence is only marginally more enjoyable. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
None worth speaking of. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Avoid CSR-based courses like the plague - full of vague, hypocritical clap-trap. The leadership courses are less than impressive too. The core courses - Marketing, Finance, Logistics, etc. - are seldom exciting but are taught competently.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
ESADE is heavily into image but lacks a genuine international flavour despite a sizeable foreign contingent in its student body. The fact is, ESADE is very 'Spanish' in its mindset and reflects the society that gave rise to it. This 'cultural handicap' will take a long time to eradicate and I wonder whether ESADE really has the will to pull it off. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: Basic phrases Personal comments:
My stereotype of the Spaniards before I went to Barcelona was that they were outgoing, friendly types. My experience revealed them as family-based, introverts with little real interest in striking up a relationship with 'outsiders' and 'foreigners'. Faculty make an effort on this score but step off campus and it is a different kettle of fish. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
A private grant Other sources of funding:
None Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
Almost all living expenses in Barcelona are sky-high. The only real exception is rail and bus travel, which is a fair bit cheaper. Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Travel: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Housing is an unpleasant surprise - expensive, very poor standard, generally noisy and small. It casts a long shadow on studying in Barcelona. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish I had dug beneath the 'Barcelona, Fun City, Culture City' hype and examined ESADE's 'international credentials' more closely. I was disappointed on both scores. In my opinion:
Stay home.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The core courses are good but not outstanding. The CSR and Leadership programmes are hype and simply an attempt by ESADE to stand out in a competitive international market. FINAL COMMENTS
Travel as much as you can on Spain's fairly cheap railway system (if only to get away from Barcelona). This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
