Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Schloßplatz 4, 91054 Erlangen, Germany
Description:
Respect for tradition and receptiveness to new ideas plus a particularly wide range of subjects including courses taught in English: these are the special features of the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). With its eleven faculties - nine of which are situated in Erlangen and two in Nuremberg - our university is the second largest in Bavaria with currently some 20,000 students enrolled. Although 70 per cent of FAU students originate from the Northern Bavarian area called Franconia, there are almost 2000 foreign students from all over the world who have come to study to Erlangen or Nuremberg. For many years the FAU has also had partnership ties with numerous foreign universities.

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Very little work involved in getting it organised, and it was well organised, if i had any problems they would be deat with quickly.
Personal comments:
Most of the wohnheims i saw were well maintained and friendly. i had a particularly cosy little einzelappartment, i was very happy with it. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
In FAU Erlangen they allow you to make up credits from any course, this makes for a very interesting experience that u can't really have in your home uni. plus try the intensive language course, its a great help.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Maybe more one on one tutorials, although we did have on tutorial a week just for erasmus which really help, law tutorials with normal law students is sometimes too difficult. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Although it was great to have so many other erasmus students, it was difficult because certain people wished to speak english all the time. Also i started to speak german with a spanish accent after a while. but it is hard to get to know locals. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
Generally everyting was about half the price of what it was at home, however this meant that we just spent more because we felt we were saving money all the time! Overall: was more expensive than at home. Travel, Telephone: was the same price as at home. Food, Nightlife, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Cinema was the only thing more expensive than at home. Razors etc were similarly priced. Shop at aldi or norma, but handelhof has more choice. MAke friends with someone who has a car. Don't buy a bike at auction. avoid Galeria Kaufhaus, the food shop is dismal. sales are great in nurnberg. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal recommendation:
The Akademisches Auslandsamt do sterling work in providing for the foreign students that they take care of every semester. About 12% of the student body is foreign, so they have plenty of experience and are very well organised. They plan many trips for the students taking them around germany, and getting erasmus students together, which is so important. FINAL COMMENTS
Try to find flights into nurnberg if at all possible, but the bahncards for rail travel if u intend to do so regularly, buy a bike, its the best way to get around erlangen, make as many friends as possible. go with the flow. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
