HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I would recommend that future students live in private accommodation not arranged through HEC. You will find a much larger range of choice of accommodation and better value for money. It is best to live near HEC - either Cote de Neiges or Universite de Montreal metro stops.
Personal comments:
HEC can arrange it for you but I had a bad experience - I only saw 2 flats neither of which I would have chosen had I been looking myself. On the other hand, it is much easier this way. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Montreal is full of bars, clubs and restaurants of all flavours - jazz, latin, blues, dance, hiphop. There is bound to be something to suit everyone. IT is a very livley city and has the best nightlife in all Canada. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences

A lot of very specific courses (like artistic companies management or e-commerce management). Course, in general, implies more work than in France for example. Be careful of not being
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
A lot of study cases throughout the semester. Sometimes a little bit difficult to cope with it when you're an international student who wants to travel and enjoys its journey but, at the end, it's all right This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
The local language as the language of instruction at the HEC in Montreal was french. As I went to France twice as an Au-pair girl before the international study exchange, my french was already pretty good. Fortunately, I had no problems because of the language barrier at the beginning like other non french native speakers exchange students had, that I could had the chance to profit more of social and academic life (while the others were still studying grammar, etc). The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Government assistance Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
My perception was that I spent roughly the same there as back home, but logically that can't be right since paying Swiss prices would probably be unaffordable for Canadians...it is weird though, the specific stuff that's more expensive in Canada than back home, e.g. Milk or Tomatoes. And of course liquor and cigarettes! Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was the same price as at home. Food: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Bank transfers are way too expensive, so your best bet is to use your bank debit card from home and withdraw cash at one of the main banks' ATMs (Banque Nationale, etc., for example at HEC's main building). Withdraw large amounts at once, so you don't have to pay the fixed fee your bank charges you at every withdrawal too often. But be aware that you only get 20-dollar bills, so you might be walking around with a pretty thick wallet. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Not to go with GIA-Gestion. My accommodation put a real damper into my exchange experience. Living alone with your landlord, and far away from other people, is not fun at all. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
HEC Montreal is a great business school. Exchange students are particularly lucky because the exchange committee (HEChange) dedicate their semester to arrange event after event for exchange students. They organise two trips throughout the semester, 2-3 parties each week, 10 days of activities during their welcoming week, and an end-of-semester gala where students get the opportunity to dress up in more formal clothing. No other institution has such a dedicated team! FINAL COMMENTS
You'll find you spend a lot in the first month but that is normal. Still, watch your spending. Try not to eat out too much (as food here is not cheap), cook at home with your housemates to save money, and when eating out, watch your tipping - the general rule is to tip the around same amount as tax.
