Jacobs University Bremen
Jacobs University Bremen, Campus Ring 1, 28759 Bremen, Germany
Description:
Jacobs University Bremen is a private, independent research university. Opened in 2001, it currently offers 20 Bachelor and 24 Graduate programs (Masters/PhD) in the fields of engineering and science, the humanities and social sciences. Jacobs University brings many of the best aspects of American higher education in Europe: the classic bachelor's degree, combining broad exposure to many different intellectual traditions with solid training within a major field of specialization; on-campus living arrangements for undergraduates that will facilitate the inter-relatedness of social with academic life; small classes, ensuring ready access to faculty; hands-on research opportunities for students at both the undergraduate and graduate level; great flexibility in terms of student input into the design of their own academic programs. Research at Jacobs University actively addresses global challenges such as Energy and Environment, Food, Water and Health, Education, Information and Communication as well as Peace and Conflict Management. An international foundation year that prepares international students for their future studies is also provided.

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? It's much more handier and practical. Plus, one does not have so much time to wander between classes to his home in case it's somewhere in the city.
Personal comments:
Accomodation is on of the best things here: rooms are singles with bathrooms shared between two. This way one gets privacy, while not being secluded from communication with some other people. Buildings fom colleges are connected by a house which hosts the canteen, and the common areas (gaming room, TV room, common study areas, etc). This is also very good in case one just want to hang around. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I take courses not only within my major, but also outside of it:like Computer Science, Chemistry and Introduction to Digital Systems. Moreover, there are transdisciplinary courses at IUB that every student needs to take.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
No, I think what we have now is pretty enough and of good quality. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) Personal comments:
English is the language in the University and you must know it to get around here. Outside it, though, German (of course) prevails and it's a bit tougher, but most of the Germans I talked to knew some English so I seldomly had too many problems. Bring your umbrella, because you will definitely need it! The airport at Luebeck is cheaper and it is near Bremen, so you can plan your flight from/to there. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
