HOUSING
by aines, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
Language, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? It is much better to live with other students who have the same lifestyle as you and with whom you can talk, as it can often be lonely in a foreign country. Student accomodation is also extremely well priced.
Personal comments:
Accomodation is organised very well at this UNiversity. Exchange students just fill in a form and they are given somewhere to stay. This saves a lot of trouble. We were also given the choice whether we wanted private accomodation or student accomodation. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Every friday there was an Erasmusstammtisch for the Erasmusstudents. That was a good occasion to meet friends. A lot of austrian students were there too. I also frequently visited the latin-american bar Latinos. It has a great atmosfere and some dancingspace. The Kulturhauskeller is the place to be when you really want to dance. It is worth the 25 ATS entrance-fee.The irish pubs are always crowded and they play great music there. In the city-park there is a small cafe. Especially in autumn, when it is still warm it is great to sit on the terrace. The Urbanikeller is also very trendy. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Well, I'm not an ordinary student. I'm learning german in a school (Vorstudentlergang), which is a prerequisite before learning at the University. I have 5 hours german a day, and the courses are really well done. Regarding the University itself, I know that it's hard sometimes to get the courses you want because of too many demands (students are queuing since 4 in the morning!!!!), but the communication with teachers (the good ones of course!) is really good.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
There is really too many papers to fill in! But this is not only regarding the academic life! That's the way it is, we have to get used to it! It's only 2 months I'm here, but everything is wonderful the hard start! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
I was surprised about my ability to speak German. I hadn´t expected to cope that well. At the begin I was a little shy and was affraid to make mistakes but that changed very quickly. I had a lot of contacts with austrian students and therefore I was obliged to speak German all the time. I also had contacts with Englishmen and Frenchmen but we spoke German most of the time. I learned a lot of new expressions and words. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
I have the chance to live in my boyfriend's flat, so I don't spend more than in my parents' house! The food is quite cheap, especially in the "students' restaurants"! You can eat Schnizels for very cheap around the University! The nightlife is also very cheap compared to France, although the concept is different; here it's more Pubs than Clubs, that explains the difference of the price you pay (160 ATS in France to get into a Club, and here between 20 ATS and 50 ATS!) Telephone, Housing: was the same price as at home. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
It's good to have money on your bank account for the interest rate! Note: all the question are in the past tense, like it was over, but I'm still in Graz, and I plan to stay here!!!! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Not really. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It is really a great place to study almost everything and the student exchange programme really works well!! FINAL COMMENTS
Austria is an interesting mixture of west and east and the culture is a conbination of this. The people are really nice and the dialects cute(don´t be disappointed if you don´t understand them all, the most Austrians don´t either!). With a little effort you´ll find all the information needed from the host university and the welcome guide was really good: read it carefully and you don´t have anything to worry about!!!
