Academic
Course recommendations
Its easy to pick and choose, but my department was not comparable to the academic standards of my home university. However, I suspected that before going and was not hugely disappointed--the social capital you will get is worth it. My biggest pet peeve was the library--very difficult to borrow books, you have to stand in line for a long time (hours, sometimes) to check something out, and you cannot even take it home.

Languages
Language of instruction: Russian
Was learning Russian a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
Russian is my native language, so no problem there. I did meet some American and European students as well--most of them went to MSU through a program, so our experiences were quite different.

I wish I had known...
I was already fluent in Russian and knew Russian culture. My goal was to experience Russian student life, and that goal was accomplished.

Personal recommendation
People that I have talked to all had positive feedback, but Russia can make your life difficult if you don't know some of the unwritten rules of bureaucracy there.

Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits
Most things are dirt-cheap. I found that a cell phone is cheaper than installing a stationary phone, so I did not have one. Transportation is very cheap, however, if you travel outside of Moscow, a hotel can be pricey. I stayed with friends, so I don't know how much people paid.

Russia gets a bad rep for everything that has to do with ATM machines, banking, etc. I had no problems whatsoever. In the dorms there are tons of announcements posted by people who are selling anything from computers to furniture, giving tutoring lessons, offering to write a paper for you, etc. My department had an internet classroom as well, and there are internet cafes all over Moscow.

There are hundreds of nightclubs in Moscow for those who are interested. I went to theaters, art galleries, concerts, etc. Moscow has many, many things to do. Theaters are wonderful and cheap for the most part. Pushkin Art Museum is fantastic.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
The appartment market in Moscow is not easy to navigate, and it is easy to be ripped off. The dorm is close to campus and you meet other students easily that way.

For 75 bucks a month I got a single room in a block of two rooms with a bathroom. The building was the Glavnoe Zdanie (Main Building) on MSU campus, the room was just remodeled and 7 sq meters. Great location and wonderful roommate.
