English was the first language which is also mine so it was EASY!! You have to get to know the slang terms though because they can sometimes throw you off!!

Although the US dollar is worth more in Australia - there was more that I wanted to see and do while I was here. Traveling is a must once your here because the country is so beautiful and I don't know when I will get a chance to come back. I am more concerned with my studies in the US which do not give me much time to study!! Its a once and a lifetime opportunity so I wasn't concerned with money!!

Open an account with the National Australia Bank and have money wired. THere is no fee and no minimal balance required. This way you are not charged for the ATM services. Food is also purchased with cash a la carte - there are NO food plans which can add up!

Academic
Course recommendations
PLT 1120 - Politics of Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll is GREAT!! THe teacher is so awesome - he's a down to earth profesor who can really relate to student and the course material is very interesting!! Tapesty was also a wonderful art class, I took this at another campus but it was well worth it!! SCI 1010 - How Science Works, is not a very interesting class and alot of papers are required! AUS 1060- Contempory AUstralia is a must for all international students. YOu learn about the history of AUstralia as well as current day media events. IT really puts you in touch with your surroundings!! THe profesors are great - if you get a chance have a drink with Jeff Jarvis - hes a great man!

I wish I had known...
My purse was stolen the third week I was here and it was VERY dificult to get another passport and it was not convenient location. Just take the money you want to spend and maybe one credit card with you!! Travel to Bali if you get a chance, its pretty inexpensive! Get to know the people from AUstralia and don't just hang out with other people from America who are on exchange. Go home with a native of the country and see how they live - its really great!! Take advantage of all you can - this country is amazing!!

Personal recommendation
I would highly recommend it to students who enjoy a small university that is away from everything. You are not close to much nightlife - everywhere you go requires a cab, even the grocery store. The classes are great and the profesors are wonderful -they are very layed back and willing to help in any way they can! THe accomodations are good also!

Lygon Street is fabulous!! It's considered Little Italy and it has heaps of great restaurants, cafes, and pubs. CHAPEL street is a MUST for shopping! Chadstone mall is also the largest mall in this hemisphere! THe Notting Hill Bar is a univesity hang-out!! The VIctorian Market it also great!! Try to travel to the Grampians to rock climb and the Great Ocean Road is unbelievable. But the Penguin Parade in Phillip Island is over-rated!!

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I enjoyed the dorms but I was a bit old compared to the other students. The apartments are also closer to the city where the dorms are VERY limited!!

The single rooms are VERY nice. The ground floor, where I stayed was very secluded, which could be good and bad. THe other rooms allowed you to meet more people and mingle very easy. You receive sheets once a week which is really nice and a maid cleans your bathroom. All accomodations are both male and female which I thought was very different, but also a GREAT way to live!
