Description:
The RWTH was originally founded as a Polytechnical Institute and retained its traditional name Technische Hochschule, although today science, humanities, business administration and medicine have established their own profile of quality. The specific strength of RWTH Aachen's Engineering Science is the combination of advanced education with research.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Leaving in an apartment-share community is the best way to meet interesting people and improve your languages skills.
Personal comments:
The university found me this cheap accomodation offer. Leaving in an apartment-share community was what I wished for. Compared to friends in Aachen, my place may be in a shaby quarter but still good, cheap and not too far from the city center. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
by lappim, Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland
Engineering, Technology, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Chico Mendez is quite popular within students because there where special student nights. German student tradition - Feuerzangenbohle (I hope the spelling is right) - is defenately worth experiencing. The carneval is also worth seeing. In Finland we don't have that kind of tradition. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
It's quite hard to compose a perfect timetable without lectures collapsing. Your learning agreement might have to be be reviewed afterwards.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
The liberty of choosing any course is disturbing and for a foreigner quite hard to handle at the beginning. A little bit more guidance at the beginning of each semester for foreign students would be welcome. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your German?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
The local language was a bit of a challange that would be won. The course is to be delivered in english but a lot of the hand outs were in the local language(german). This motivated you to learn the language faster. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
There are very few free events and travelling costs always even if you are travelling with tight budget. Travel, Overall: was more expensive than at home. Food, Nightlife, Telephone, Housing: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
I didn't experience any financial surprises. I had acurate information. I don't have any specific cost-saving tips. There were student discounts and weekend tickets for regional trains for budget travelling when I was there. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...

Nothing. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Its no wonder the best university, ofcourse it has some problems like all, but never dissappoints the students in learning and earning knowledge. Iam proud to be a RWTHian FINAL COMMENTS
Travel inside aachen or to cologne and dusseldorf is free , comes with student pass , but anything more than that, advisable would be the weekend pass to travel throughout the NRW region, by the regional express or regional BAHN, but ICE and IC are very expensive , try avoiding as much as u can when in student stage, each ticket from frankfurt to aachen or vise versa can cost 10% of the total legal monthly earning of a international student, so one time travel , u get to expend almost 20% by ICE to and fro to aachen from frankfurt. Coming another point of my advice would be to stick to books as much as you can and get the best of what u wanted to get here , use the professors and assistant research scholars knowledge and learn things better as people do things same like everywhere , but this people do things very differently , though they do the same things, that what is the difference between the RWTH and other universitties i feel. Learning while you work here is something a cream over a cake, helps u earn and learn the things detailedly and helps u to get the concepts clear for the exams. Never take the exam in this universtiy without preparation as three times u fail u are out of the university as a dropout. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
