Course recommendations:
Readers must normally be bought for every course and often there is a supplementary book also, so buying reading materials can be expensive if you are staying for the year and studying perhaps 9 or 10 courses. A good idea is to club together with your friends and share readers, which are specifically tailored to the course to not as good value as a proper book which you can use again.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Courses in Groningen were extremely varied as regards workload and difficulty, so it is difficult to generalise, but overall I had no real problems. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

I was in the Netherlands to improve my Dutch so I was allowed to take any courses I liked. The Japanese history course was very good, as were the Japanese language lessons in the evening.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
I didn't need any specific grades to 'pass' the courses and so I couldn't participate in the homework. A lot of work, including essays, was done on a group basis rather than individually. Some of the international students found it hard to get used to this. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Don't expect an easy erasmus in the Netherlands. Courses in Groningen are hard, specially in Law, but it is to say that they are very interesting
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
You cannot smoke in he cantine since 1 January 2004....Exams at the end of the course when you are leaving are very annoying... you want to enjoy your last days and you have to study hard to pass them. I would prefer exams during the course or papers This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The university is big and really bureaucratic, so signing up for classes and registering for exams can be tiring. Try to get someone to set you up with a student mentor who can show you the city, the university and where to register, etc. Also, getting books doesn't seem to difficult for the locals, but it was for me.

Course recommendations:
Check out the European Law and International Law courses at the faculty of Law!!! You can attend them, even if you aren't a law student; just contact the exchange student coordinator for more information. Notice, though, that most of the courses in English at the Faculty of Law are LL.M. courses, so they are quite demanding and require a lot of studying. At the Faculty of Humanities there aren't many courses given in English, except for the Ducth Studies programme, the courses of which are interesting but not very challenging, since the academic backround of the students attending them varies a lot. The Dutch language courses are really useful, though!

In the Netherlands it's crucial to attend the first class of the course. In that moment groups of students (that will work together for the whole course) are made and if you are missing, you'll not have a group and you cannot make your exam

Be sure that all professors will do their best to make you feel right about choosing Groningen for your studies: perfectly well organised, innovative teaching methods, capacities in interacting with foreign students, fluent english. Personal reccomendation: International law, African law(!), Sociology of Law.- Do take the best advantage of the Univ. library just opposite the University, where a wide range of sources of knowledge, from books to multimedia, will assist you in gaining he information you need.

Comparative criminal law, International Law, African law, Sociology of law: the teachers of all of the above should be proud of their teaching capacities&students who attended their lectures grateful&satisfied indeed. Additionally, take advantage of the perfectly organised library opposite the University: books but also multimedia is there to help you through for your studies. Simply get registered at the library and find all u need by the computer.

For many courses the final grade is computed as an average of final exams and assignments, so it is recommendable to start studying soon. Exams are not impossible to pass, but not that easy either. Study!
