HOUSING
by Nuria, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain
Business Studies, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? I was agree either living on campus or sharing an apartment with other people of the university. The latter is the one that I finally found.
Personal comments:
It is quite complicated to find housing at this university, but if you do the right moves, it is possible to find housing in about a week. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
Most of my time in the evenings were spent at the grassmarket. We would have a pint (or two~) at Biddy Mulligans and then wait at the "Hanging Point" for a taxi. The night started when we would arrive to Eros for dancing till early morning. I never felt scared of walking in the middle of the night because there were almost as many people out at night as there were during the day. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The only trouble I had was getting used to their curriculum. It is a very different approach to testing taking and papers than in the United States. I would study up on how long the classes are, what the studies will entails, and what is expected, especially for visiting students.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Professors must take into account students have different perceptions of University studies. Make expectations clear and concise in order to get the best out of all students. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
During the whole year I followed Honours Courses in English. I also had to attend tutorials during which I had to speak in front of the rest of the group (presentations, exercises to solve...). Reading all the books they asked us to read, writing essays in English, taking the same final exams as the rest of the local students, forced and helped me to improve my English greatly. Thanks to this experience I have acquired a sound grasp of the Economic English vocabulary. Going out with Scottish and international friends and sharing a flat with three other international students (Swedish, Dutch and American)was a very good way to improve my everyday knowledge of the English vocabulary. Well, i did a lot of travelling...so a big chunk of money right there...but it was worth it!!! take advantage of Ryan air!!!! free flights all over Europe!!! don't miss out! Food, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
Don't buy a bedding pack from the University accommodation...they charge about 30 pounds...go to the pound stretcher or pound saver (they are on every corner) and get one for half of that money!!! there are tons of second hand stores around the university area...you can pretty much find anything you want. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Buy waterproof clothing cos it rains a lot and it's too windy for an umbrella most of the time. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The Universtiy of Edinburgh is a great place to be with lots of people to meet and lots of activities. FINAL COMMENTS
Even though the year was great, I'm disappointed that my home university won't give me credit for most of the courses I took, so that academically I "wasted" a year. Personally, it was the best thing I could have done and I would do it again in a New York minute!!!! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
