Why? I lived with a small group of international students from the university. Therefore we developed a much closer bond than if I had lived with a large number of students on campus. Also, living with a family would not have allowed me to develop a deep awareness/understanding of a variety of cultures.
Personal comments:
The house I was placed in was quite a distance from the university compared to other forms of residence. However, it was in a very nice, safe suburb next to the beach, which made it a very positive experience. The cost of the housing was quite expensive in comparison to what local students were paying. My room was also quite small for the price I paid. However, the facilities were good and I developed close bonds with the people I lived with.

Why? If you are lucky to share your flat with a nice person, an apartment is the best choice for going on exchange! You can design the rooms according to your own taste and furthermore you have enough privacy and space if you need some time for yourself.
Personal comments:
The university is concerned about finding accomodation for all exchange students. Whether they lived in a room in the dormatory or shared a flat - most of them were really satisfied about the housing facilities offered. One negative remark - the final payment was more than initially stated and expected.

Why? I think living on campus would have been more fun because more exchange students live there. But, I enjoyed living in the house because I lived with Dutch people, which allowed my to immerse myself more in the culture.
Personal comments:
The accomodation on campus is small and crowded and you really have to not mind noise because there were insane parties all the time (it is quieter in the pink building though)

Personal comments:
For the first semester the University help me to exchange my room with a local student, then she came back, so I moved with other student to another big house.

Although I had asked for an individual room, I was assigned a shared apartment room. In the end though, this was ok and the location was very good, right in the centre of town and just a 15 minute walk to university.

Why? The House was a wreck but the students who lived there was very kind and did everything to manage to build it up and making it work
Personal comments:
My accommodation was without heating, with rats and without any working furniture. This sounds like it was terrible (and yes, it was, atleast in the beginning) But I have to comment that we were put together in a very special way through we were forced to cooperate and together we were able to work out a plan to make everything work, cultural, language and housing facilities. The situation created an atmosphere of teamwork over the culturalborder and created an experience where we learned to work together. AND that is the best visdom I have learned from the netherlands, to be able to solve problems together with people from different cultures and acctually I really loved it.

Why? Well, when you opt for a flat/appartment, you have your own space including facilities that you do not have to share as bathroom, shower. Moreover, it was important to me to have some privacy.
Personal comments:
The host university helps in finding an arrangement (flat/kind of camous)etc However, it is an above-market price arrangement. Sometimes, You can be very unplesantly surprised.

Why? Not much integration with other foreign students, would also like to have tohe opportunity to learn more about other living cultures etc...
Personal comments:
To be honest it was a litle disappointing. Although the house was close to the University it was in a very poor area and socially i didnt feel safe being outside on my street of residence after 8pm. Also had problems in the house that were not dealt with adequately by the housing association, DUWO who really dont care.
