Turun Yliopisto (UTU)
University of Turku, International Office, 20014 Turku, Finland
Description:
The first university in Finland, Academia Aboensis, was established in Turku in 1640. In 1828, following the Great Fire of Turku, the university was transferred to Helsinki, the new capital of the country. Both teachers and students left the city, which for 90 years was without any university. Finland's achievement of independence in 1917 gave new impetus to these aspirations, and a campaign started that year by the Turku Finnish University Society raised 22 000 donations towards the foundation of a Finnish-language university. Thus the first Finnish University was founded in Turku in 1920. The University of Turku was a private foundation untill 1974, when the ownership of the University was transferred to the State.

even though everybody in Finland speaks English, It is hard to find a job if you dont speak the local language which is virtually impossible. You will find no problems with language but, of course, you wont understand anybody when they talk to each other This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Almost every Finn speaks english, so there is no real need to learn finnish => it is quite hard to speak the finnish language because everybody starts to speak english when he/she recognises that you´re a foreign person. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Finnish language is extremely difficult to learn and your good purpose to get right on it will not last for so long. Everybody in Finland speaks a good English, and you will find that way pretty much more easy. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Most communications were in english so, I just had to flow with the current. I tried learning a little Finish though, but it turned out that I need more time to master the skill of pronunciations This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The language of instruction in Finland was English. I have always been able to speak English quite well so never had problems with it. However, in Turku there are two dominant spoken languages: Finnish and Swedish. I loved Finnish but did not have many opportunities to learn it properly although I could manage with the daily situations/experience. Since medical students need to communicate with patients, it was sometimes difficult to fully participate in clinical work. Very many Finnish people speak English, but not all. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
