HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? it gives you the opportunity to live in a sharing situation with people of completely different cultures
Personal comments:
I had to do all the work myself and accomodation is generally very good. Cadiz is also a very cheap part of Spain to stay in so it was a pleasant surprise. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Activities: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
There are a lot of places to go out in Cadiz. The most favourite bar at the beginning is of course "Nahu" and the discos near to the port. When you get to know the city, you will find a lot of bars and restaurants where you can spend your time and enjoy your stay in Cadiz (Bars: Umec, Timbre, Excalibur; Tapas Bars: Gotinga, Garbanzo Negro, Montaneros, 100 Montaditos, El refugio...) My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The level is a lot higher in literature courses, I would say do as much written as possible.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
They need to improve their resources, Internet access and books in the library at Cadiz itself. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Basic phrases My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
I chosed Spain, because I wanted to learn Spanish. Only from the courses of my university in Viena I never had learned that much. You can only learn a language when you live in that country. You learn how to use phrases, words of the daily live, the slang of the streets and many more things. For me it was very important to go to Spain and I am sure I will go to other countries as well. Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
For an American living in Cadiz, a good life was relativly inexpensive. I spent more on telephone and travel because I wanted to see Europe and made calls home to friends and family. Travel, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Overall: was the same price as at home. Food, Nightlife, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
I found it to be very inezpensive for clothes, nightlife, travel, but much more expensive for the phone, internet, and utilities. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Spain is still very close to England and Germany, so it did not require any special preparations. I am very used to travelling and do not feel uncomfortable with unfamiliar situations. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
If you chose Cádiz, you will study in very modern buildings, situated right at the beach. The atmosphere is stimulating and the offer of courses very extensive and diverse. However, Computer facilities are very restricted, so bring along a laptop if you own one, or borrow one from a good friend. If you are lucky you will be taught by energetic and very friendly and helpful teachers, as most most of them were. FINAL COMMENTS
Spain is a country that is very different to those of northern Europe. Prepare yourself for having to get used to a completely different life-style and - rhythm, which can be very tempting and is very enjoyable (siesta, extensive dinners and nights). Never take people too personal when they seem a bit rough, it is just their temperament, their immense verbal speed and their coarse voices from all the smoking. Make sure you get a taste of the cultural life, the Flamenco (which I am learning now), the bullfighting, the stunning horses, the cuisine (wine, cheese, paella - which I love to cook) and of course the beautiful architecture. Make sure you do a trip through Andalucia, where the african influence has touched all aspects of spanish life. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
