Université François Rabelais
Université François Rabelais, 3 rue des Tanneurs, 37041 TOURS Cedex, France
Description:
Rather than a single campus on the town's outskirts, François-Rabelais University opted for multiple sites harmoniously scattered across the urban area. This unusual lay out, a university in the heart of a town, works out to the students'advantage. It also makes the town's economic, social and cultural life more dynamic.

HOUSING

Translation/ Interpretation, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I enjoy living independently, with my own resources.
Personal comments:
The advantage was contact with the other students of my age, speaking French and immersing myself in their culture. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Language, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
The Pale is the best Erasmus bar in Tours. It's an Irish Pub so you can mix with Anglophones and Francophones at the same time. Check it out on Rue Colbert! Café Chaud is legendary. Pyms is a trek away from the town centre, but is the only big night club (it's close to Sanitas). Opposite Pyms is Le Corsaire. Here you have a pirate themed cocktail and ice-cream bar. BEST COCKTAILS DU MONDE! In the Summer you should check out Tutti Gusti on Place Plumereau. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Try all the courses you are interested in during the first weeks before choose any of them.Philosophy and languages have a very high level
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Speak with the French students, at the beginning they seem to be quite shy but once they know you they are very easy-going and begin to invite you and your friends to lots of parties This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
At the beginning it was difficult to speak French, I wasn´t used to speak it but to write it, but French people helps you a lot, they explain you what you don´t understand and speak slower when they see you´ve problems.Courses are easy to follow, the most difficult thing for me was to understand slang but after a month you realiza they use always the same words This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

Linguistics, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Family CAF Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Housing in a university hall is really cheap, especially with the help from the CAF (that everyone can get): I paid 100 euros/month ! Trains are not so expensive either, especially when you have a reduction ticket called "carte 12-25". Enjoy your time travelling, which means you will be spending more than at home, but it's such a beautiful country. Drinks in bars and clubs are really expensive in France. Food, Travel, Nightlife: was more expensive than at home. Overall, Telephone: was the same price as at home. Housing: was less expensive than at home.

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Many people didn´t know that there were several "facs" and some of them (Law,Economics,Engineering) are quite far from the centre ville. If I had known Tours and Loire Valley were so beautiful I would have gone there before. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
People who works at the International Relationships Office are great but those who are at the University offices(LEA Office, English degree Office)-they have to give you the schedules, help you with the subjets, inform you about your marks-are not very kind to help you, so you have to insist several times. There is an Association for foreign students, they will help you very much so,in all the areas. FINAL COMMENTS
It is useful to have la Carte 12-25 that lets you travel around France with a 50% discount in all the trains.Go to the CAF(Caisse d´Alocations Familiales)when you arrive, they give grants for housing to all the students.Seize the opportunity of having French classmates to open a conversation and make good friends, you should not go whith people of your same nationality all the time (as we all do), make a profit of the interests of French people in meeting other cultures.Take part in the programme of "parrainage"-you´re introduced to a French student who will help you all the time you are in Tours,it is useful for understanding better the culture and they usually invite you to parties and introduce you all their friends, very interesting!
