HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: flat sharing
Why? Because Witten is a small city and there is nothing to do, and if you live alone it can be boring.
Personal comments:
All in all the University helped to find the accomodation. One has to be carefull in Germany, because normally the flats are rented empty not like in London where you have a bed and a table. So I would recommend to find people who are going abroad want to rent their flat for that time. (that is what I did) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
check the web site well in advance since the courses (not all) are listed there and you have to sign up well in advance in order to get in!!
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Witten should make it easier for international students to get into the courses, and the teachers should also be more patient when they are asked some questions!! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your German?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
understanding can be a prblem if your german is not so good. Teachers and students use a difficult vocabulary but they are willing to adapt so you can understand! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish that my home university would have told me how the teaching in Witten was before going there. I was not used to that style and I had difficulties to adapt. Also choosing the courses would have been easier if my home university would have arranged it earlier. In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
if you like debating and not comming to a real conclusion you will love it!! But if you are more the practical person, you better stay home! FINAL COMMENTS
If you have the possibility to take your car with, do so, Witten is small and there is nothing to do there, but Bochum and Dortmund are not far (by car). The semester Ticket also allows you to take the train and the bus whenever you want (you can even travel to Düsseldorf for free!). If you don´t have a car, you can buy a cheap bike at the Train station, which will allow you to be more independant (busses run every 20 minutes and there is not Tube there).
