CEMS, PIM Universität zu Köln (UNIKOELN)
University of Cologne, Kerpener Straße 4, 50923 Köln, Germany
Description:
Numbering almost 62,000 students, the University of Cologne, is one of the largest of the German universities. It is also one of the oldest: in 1988 it celebrated six hundred years of existence. The foundation of many other universities in late medieval Germany was due to the initiative of important-spiritual and temporal authorities, but in Cologne it was the citizens who established the university. Thus today the University of Cologne is still a "city university", and that in a double sense: founded by the citizens of Cologne and with a university campus not outside of but within the city itself. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the large economic and industrial Rhine/Ruhr area in the north and the city of Bonn in the south. Among students the University of Cologne is high on the national scale of popularity, as surveys have repeatedly shown.

HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? If I could find a room/apartment near campus, which is very hard in Köln, I would prefer that, because even though the location of on campus housing is pretty good, I just wish I had had better flatmates. Mine were terrible.
Personal comments:
The facilities are incredible, just be warned that you may not live with people you're fond of. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
The Albertus and Magnus cafe's in the Zulpicher Strasse are great. They have good food (a lot of italian which is not so fat as the german food) and not expensive. Further you have to visit the brewhouses where you can eat. And of course a visit to Das Ding, the student discothek, which is really great. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The strategic courses I followed where really great. Also the course on Fast Moving Consumer Goods, which was facilitated by Henkel, was interesting. Further there was a german course on e-commerce which was really good.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Try to take also some german courses who are not an the CEMS programme. The level of the CEMS courses is not so high and there are very interesting german courses This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
I had learned German for more than six years already and passed examinations at Goethe Institute as well as at my home university. Therefore, I had very few problems with communication even in the beginnig of my stay in Cologne. Anyway, my knowledge of the everyday´s language as well as of the language of instruction improved - i learned new vocabulary and became more self-confident in speaking and writing. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
No, everything is very well organized at the university. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
It would be great when a greater variety of CEMS courses could be offered FINAL COMMENTS
Bring or buy a bike; make sure you live in the university area or inner city; try to live in a students appartment; go out a lot, the nightlife is great; do a CEMS business project in German; go atleast to Muenchen and Berlin, but travel more when possible; make German friends, not only ex-change students; buy a prepaid cellphone card!
