Rent in Germany is amazingly cheap for students in comparison to Sydney, it was great! Alcohol and clubbing in general is also SUPER cheap compared to Australia. The semester pass allows you to travel for free within the state which was awesome and you can fly everywhere with Ryanair at really low costs.

5 euro ATM fees when you don't use your bank's ATM. Found out after 3 months. Killed me.

Final comments
My exchange here was hands down the best time of my life. Cologne is in the perfect location for travel and has the friendliest people in Germany. Night life is great and you never get bored. I recommend you get a bike, cycling around the city is great as it's so bike-friendly and flat. I simply had the best time ever. I LOVE COLOGNE <3

Academic
Course recommendations
To be honest I rarely went to class. If you want to practice your German I recommend doing a seminar in German for German students. It's a great way to experience their learning environment and meet other German students. If you're doing German literature do a subject taught by Ingo Breuer, he's great!

It was kind of painful doing subjects where your entire grade is based on the final exam because I just never ever showed up to class and had to majorly cram/panic during finals. THANK GOD for retakes ;)

If you take subjects in German then obviously it's an opportunity to improve your language skills. The pre-semester language course was also of great quality and free!

Housing
Type of housing: WG
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why?
I enjoyed living in a WG. I shared the place with 5 other people and three of them were German so I had the opportunity to practice my German and meet lots of German friends through them which was great! Also, super cheap!

Flanagan's student night on Tuesdays is always ridiculously popular with the exchange student. Drinks are super cheap but I find it too crowded. All of my German friends LOVED Cent Club on Zulpicher Platz cause it's so cheap. Personally I loved Loom at Friesenplatz the most but you'll find plenty of great places around to party at. Never a dull moment!
