Université François Rabelais

Université François Rabelais, 3 rue des Tanneurs, 37041 TOURS Cedex, France
3.73 / 5 based on 66 reviews.
Description:
Rather than a single campus on the town's outskirts, François-Rabelais University opted for multiple sites harmoniously scattered across the urban area. This unusual lay out, a university in the heart of a town, works out to the students'advantage. It also makes the town's economic, social and cultural life more dynamic.

It is useful to have la Carte 12-25 that lets you travel around France with a 50% discount in all the trains.Go to the CAF(Caisse d´Alocations Familiales)when you arrive, they give grants for housing to all the students.Seize the opportunity of having French classmates to open a conversation and make good friends, you should not go whith people of your same nationality all the time (as we all do), make a profit of the interests of French people in meeting other cultures.Take part in the progr... L´Auberge de Jeunesse was in front of the University (fac de Lettres) and in the center of the city, the only disadvantage is that it is pretty unclean

Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
At the beginning it was difficult to speak French, I wasn´t used to speak it but to write it, but French people helps you a lot, they explain you what you don´t understand and speak slower when they see you´ve problems.Courses are easy to follow, the most difficult thing for me was to understand slang but after a month you realiza they use always the same words

Personal spending habits:
In Spain , I´m studying in a big city (far from home) and there the housing is much more expensive and there are no helps of the Government. Trains in France are cheaper and there are lots of discounts.Nightlife in Spain is very cheap, in France a beer costs 5 euros!!and you have to pay to enter in the discos.Telephone calls are expensive, specially to mobile phones where you have to pay the minimun fee even if nobody picks up the phone
Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Travel, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Housing:you have to pay two months in advance and a deposit

OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...
Academic reasons
KEY:
Very Important.
Important.
Not really important.
Unimportant.
Culture
Costs
Activities
Campus life
Party / people
Weather / Location
I wish I had known...
Many people didn´t know that there were several "facs" and some of them (Law,Economics,Engineering) are quite far from the centre ville. If I had known Tours and Loire Valley were so beautiful I would have gone there before.
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
People who works at the International Relationships Office are great but those who are at the University offices(LEA Office, English degree Office)-they have to give you the schedules, help you with the subjets, inform you about your marks-are not very kind to help you, so you have to insist several times. There is an Association for foreign students, they will help you very much so,in all the areas.

FINAL COMMENTS

It is useful to have la Carte 12-25 that lets you travel around France with a 50% discount in all the trains.Go to the CAF(Caisse d´Alocations Familiales)when you arrive, they give grants for housing to all the students.Seize the opportunity of having French classmates to open a conversation and make good friends, you should not go whith people of your same nationality all the time (as we all do), make a profit of the interests of French people in meeting other cultures.Take part in the programme of "parrainage"-you´re introduced to a French student who will help you all the time you are in Tours,it is useful for understanding better the culture and they usually invite you to parties and introduce you all their friends, very interesting!
