KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why? There is nothing better than living with a host family to true out new language. Also there are other benefits to living in a host family, like use of media (movies, books) that one would have to purchase otherwise. It is truly a moment to discover how you behave in relation to others.
Personal comments:
Because the family was assigned to me, I did not know them previously. It would have helped if I had had a list of all the rules beforehand. I was restricted to cooking only from the microwave if my host mom was not home, and I could not have friends over.

Personal social experience

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
The best cafe is on Quai St Antoine - you get an amazing view of Vieux Lyon. On a Sunday morning you can enjoy oysters and wine after you've been to the market. The best night spot for me was the Ice Club (near Perrache station on the Rhone).Beware, alcohol is very expensive in bars, no student discounts!

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Some of the courses don't have a separate discussion section where students dive deeper into the material so as a foreign student, lectures were a bit hard to understand.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Most of the courses I took had one final grade, and as a foreign student, it is hard to have a grade based solely on one final exam. Also, it can be hard to make friends in class because all French students take the same classes in their major and form friendships beginning in their first year of university.

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
My understanding of the French language was fluent before I studied in Lyon, but my speaking skills were not as good. I think that I really improved my speaking skills by being able to interact with students, and by being forced to speak with others in my day-to-day activities.

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Second-hand bedding
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience
Personal spending habits:
Spent more on travel as there were more places to visit, more opportunities same on nightlife, although drinks are more expensive i didn't bother going to proper clubs too much so no entrance charges food- more eating out as it's less expensive than at home, and also no cheap brands like at home.
Food, Travel, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Nightlife, Housing: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
CAF - housing benefit, difficult to deal with the actual administration, but worth it. Beware Bank charges for going overdrawn, they happen at the endof the month not when the accidental overdraft occurred. Don't let your landlord keep your deposit ( S Peltat )

I wish I had known...
I thought that we would have classes with French or atleast other international students, but it was only UC students. I am very dissapointed with the set up.
In my opinion:
Most people loved it.

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
The facilities aren't the greatest, they are doing a lot of construction, but it doesn't really matter. The classes are decent, but its the night and weekends that make the trip worth it.

FINAL COMMENTS

Lyon is a great city but also travel as much as you can. Bring twice the money and half the clothes (shopping in Spain is awesome). Buy a 12-25 card from SNCF (the rail company) it gives 25-50% discounts. You can ride the metro without paying but watch out for controllers. The presqu'ile, Croix-Rousse, and the sixieme arrondissements are the best. Definitely visit the Musee de Beaux Arts and see the traboules.
