I wish I had known...
How large ammounts of tequilla adle your brain! But seriously I think that you have to remember that although France is only across the Channel there are some subtle but important cultural differences- especially being a woman in the South. Things that were normal for us - skirts in nightclubs weren't really the done thing over there we came to realise. Some are seriously disturbed and forget a foreign woman isn't just a play thing.

I don't really feel that the experience was greatly to do with the univeristy except that it allowed me to come to France to study but the fun experience I had was down to the people I met outside of the Unviversity and getting to know the other 5 people from my course in Edinburgh,

At the end of the day whereever you are you have to realise that you need to make the most of it. Not worry about what you're missing out at home but what your friends are missing out with you. A year abroad can seem like a long period of time but it's nothing so enjoy it to the fullest!

Beautiful city; laid-back school.
Tristan Z
France, Graduate
, 2019
Overall
Université Paul-Valery Montpellier III is an interesting school. First of all, one must understand that university is essentially "free" for French students (they only have to pay about 200€ in social security), so there is little motivation for students and for professors to learn and to teach, since they can fail and retake classes for essentially no money. The grading scale is 1-20, with about a 15-20 being an A. It is virtually impossible to get over a 17, no matter how hard you try on something. Getting a 9 is "passing", though, so it's not hard to be an intermediate student. The campus itself is neglected and ridden with graffiti. It really needs to be updated; it's kind of stuck in the seventies. The only redeeming quality were the coffee vending machines which my friends and I frequented. I did not realize that it would be in this state before I went to France, so it was sort of a shock. Montpellier itself is a very beautiful city, so I was surprised with the school's campus. We were required to take integrated classes with French students as well as classes geared for international students. The international student classes were beneficial and helped improve my French. Professors were nice and spoke only in French to us, and the workload was easy. I would have actually liked a little more homework to keep myself occupied. However, the international/integrated classes were confusing (professors wouldn't show up; tests were unclear) which was discouraging. We did not find out when our final exams were for integrated classes until about a week before the exam, so it was hard making travel plans, and we were forced to kind of sit around and wait.

Pros
Having the opportunity to travel with all the breaks UPV III provided and the location.
Cons
Administration at UPV III tried their best. They have lots of students to deal with, and are a bit understaffed. Offices are only open a few days of the week at specific times, but administrators were quick to answer emails.

Be friendly and nice to your adviser, he/she will be of great help during the year, but not at the beginning when all the new students give him/her headache!

Montpellier is THE town to go study for a year! Its very close to the Mediterranean, close to Spain, Italy, and the Cote d'Azur. Its a student town full of energy, life, and parties. Try to get to know locals through club activities, its hard to do so in school. Travel, travel, travel. Dont study too much - you wont remember your studying later on, but going to have a beautiful day at the beach or hiking in the mountains. Email me for any advice you might wanna get!

Etudes à distance

Overall
