Confidence plays a large part. You will only improve if you go out and make mistakes. They're more likely to make an effort with you if you are not shy in coming forward.

As there was not much interaction with the local students and I was living a lone I didn't learn a lot of new "French" French, what I learned was mostly academic.

Total immersion is the best thing for learning a foreign language. I was around too many Americans but I feel I progressed extremely well.

I became much more comfortable speaking French and I enjoyed taking classes in French and learning to communicate about everyday things.
