Why? I applied to International House, but didn't get in. Staying there was definitely my first choice.

Not easy to find housing in a city you're not familiar with.

Happy hour on Fridays at Rock Bottom in La Jolla; PB and Gaslamp in weekends. Activity not to miss: surfing.

Everything's simply more expensive.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Telephone: was the same price as at home.

Wire transfers in big chunks is cheapest way to transfer money -- costs about 25 Euros per transaction (fixed cost).
