take as much money with you as you can get: you will need it for travel (New York, Niagara Falls, Chicago, etc.) and for Shopping. Don't take too many clothes with you - they are fucking cheep over there! Read Review

It was not easy at first to find my way in academic life because of pronunciation. But most of my collegues were helpful and patient :-) ...so in the end I could make myself clear

Personal recommendation:
It's a campus town, with a typical American campus (quad, etc.). If you want to experience this movie-feeling, that it's the right choice. Concerning the academic setting, the UIUC is a brilliant choise too, and it has one of the biggest libraries in the States.
