I worked during my study abroad experience
Personal spending habits:
in general living costs in melbourne are very low, never the less nightlife seems so be more expensive depending on how much you are used to spend on a night out at home
Travel, Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Food, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
try to buy groceries from the markets in Footscray (much cheaper then supermarkets), when setting up a bank account at home watch out for australian partner banks so you don't have to pay fees for getting money out of the atms

I am absolutely satisfied. Don't worry about your time, the Australians are very relaxed, time for studying and travelling is enough
