HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? The student residence is near to the campus and the costs are favorable. Although Cergy is not the nicest place to live the community of foreign students compensates a lot.
Personal comments:
For foreign student of any partner programm of EPSCI or ESSEC accommodation is organised by the administration. There is of course the possibility to choose an accommodation by own but this is quite difficult. Cergy is just half an hour by RER from Paris but living there is very expensive. STUDENT LIFE
by Simone, Fachhochschule Dortmund, Dortmund, Germany

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Personal comments:
Nightlive in Cergy is reduced to organised parties by the university (which are marvellous!!), a few pubs, a nightclub and a few nice restaurants. The school offers a booklet each year where all(!) places are described and quoted. It is useful to have a car in order to go to Paris and there you can find all kind of entertainment! ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Overall the courses given are very good, although there are some teachers who seem determined to make life difficult for the students the courses are well given, and in a fun and interactive way.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Don't plant so many exams in 2 weeks. Even if you study ahead this does not make it easier. Two weeks no sleeping kind of wears you out. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
The year abroad greatly improved my language and communication skills. With every course taught in French we were given every opportunity to practise and improve our language skills. Furthermore, the various social and sporting events enabled me to interact with local students, many of whom I still keep in touch with which allowed me to pick up on various slang phrases. On top of this interaction with the other ERASMUS students proved more than useful. As well as forging great friendships, I was able to work on my Spanish. EXPENSES
by Vanessa, Hanzehogeschool, Hogeschool van Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings An ERASMUS grant Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Food simply is a bit more expensive than where I normally live, and the same goes for the housing. As for travel, I went home a couple of times, plus that in my home country we get a public transport card from the government as students, in my host university I had to finance the travel from home to school myself. Food, Travel, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife, Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
If you can avoid opening a bank account, do. A french bank account simply costs money, and although they advise you to open one, I could've easily done without. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Information about Cergy and how it really looks like. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Regarding the quality of my studies I would recommand it to everybody. The equipment of ESSEC is very good and there are a lot of student association. The sport facilities are excellent (there is nearly no sport unpossible) and the students pub Foy's is a nice place to have a pint or two. The school is the top business school in France and has an important alumni network. Over 30% of students are from foreign countries and therefore the athmospere is very international. FINAL COMMENTS
If using Thalys ask for a "Mini" price. This means you pay less but you have to fix when you want to return in advance. No possibility to change traveling hour. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
