Personal comments
The University provides German classes to foreign students, which are quite good. Local students are fairly friendly, but do not seem to be too excited about making new friends from abroad, probably to due their intense workloads. So you are more likely to have a good time with the other foreign students you meet there...

Overall
I wish I had known...
Yes! That ebs is a University that you should only choose on academic grounds. As harsh as it might sound, you are likely to have a better time elsewhere, due to the remote location and slightlightly unfriendly local students.

Personal recommendation
Don't go there except on academic grounds, for which the University really is an elite place, that will also be very useful on your CV should you want to work in Germany sometime, due to its top reputation. Socially, you are likely to have more fun elsewhere...

Academic
Course recommendations
Choose easy courses, especially if you are struggling with the German language, but nonetheless choose courses in that language. That's because the academic standards there are quite high, i.e. there are rarely easy courses. Big exception: Entrepreneurship, which I took. Good teaching, not too much work & the professors love to give good grades :)

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
There is good housing available, but I would strongly advise anyone to pay a visit to the university town to search for good accommodation a few months in advance, otherwise you will be left with very few, and often unattractive, choices. The housing market in the University town (where approx 90% of the students live) is quite limited!

Personal comments
I had to find housing on my own, due to the fact that my native tongue is German. For other foreign students who do not speak the language, the University provides assistance in finding accommodation.

Personal comments
Wiesbaden (20 mins by car), Mainz (25 mins) and Frankfurt (45 mins) are the larger cities near Oestrich-Winkel. While Wiesbaden (Parkcafe is an all-time favourite for students) and Frankfurt (King Kamehameha is the most prestigious club in town) are more upmarket and fairly expensive, Mainz is more of a student city with a good variety of clubs, bars and cafes.
