Bamberg is a lovely pretty little village-but it is no Munich. Nightlife is limited but that did mean that we made firm friendship groups and you basically new everyone when you went out. Good location to travel from-skiing in Austria, Prague, Munich. Was excellent for a semester but after that you may want a bit more! Read Review

HOUSING
by Katri, Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki, Finland
Language, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: student housing, shared, about 3,5km from the uni
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? While it was easy to go to the university arranged housing, free market flats were quite cheap in Bamberg as well.
Personal comments:
The apartments are ok - if you don't mind living in the not-so-pretty new part of this incredibly beautiful old town. Rates are cheap and there's a LOT of social life.

STUDENT LIFE
by Katri, Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki, Finland
Language, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Nightlife: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
A lot of good trips are organised to the exhange students: with 50 euros for a weekend in berlin, they really are value to your money. Night life in Bamberg is nothing special, that is, wouldn't be inf there weren't the wild Erasmus students! Kleber bar is legendary.

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Unless you want to concentrate specifically on a field, out of choice or because you have to, try something different. It's the best chance you'll have, but make sure that the courses you do decide to take improve your knowledge of your host country's language. That is the most important thing.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Nothing springs to mind, other than the recommendation to do the exams - this will ensure that you do do something productive and don't regret having wasted your time when you go home.

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
My German was not great when I arrived in Bamberg. But the German as a foreign language department was very good and with all the socializing I did, my German was actually pretty fluent upon departure. But this only happens if you spend a whole year abroad. It takes about 5-6 months to get used to the concept. After that is when your language improves. Bamberg can be a bit tough because of the dialect, but the dialect actually is a conversation piece when you don't understand the locals. They often want to enlighten you on Franconian!

EXPENSES
by Doug, George Washington University, Washington DC, United States
International Relations, University Agreement
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Second-hand bedding
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
home university funding
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits:
Cost of living in a small Bavarian city is far less than that of Washington, DC. Students from less urban areas in the USA found Bamberg to be comparably priced.
Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
The telephone is a shock in Germany. Very expensive. And Germany has a great evening about once a month called Spermuehl, on which people put out their random "trash" that we would normally save for a yard sale, and it just sits on the street overnight and people go and rummage through it for treasures. I found lots of good pots and pans that way!
